Orthognathic surgery is a technique that requires a detailed analysis of the face and occlusion of the patient. The usual procedures in this treatment are orthodontics, followed by orthognathic surgery and orthodontics again.

In some instances, it is sufficient to mobilize only the upper jaw or just the mandible. However, it is necessary to mobilize both jaws through a bimaxillary surgery to obtain a satisfactory result in most situations. Finally, it may be advisable to retouch the chin (mentoplasty) to get complete facial harmony; in some instances, it is also necessary to modify the nasal pyramid (rhinoplasty).

Orthognathic surgery is an intervention that should be carried out in a hospital environment, making use of general anesthesia and hospitalization of one night in case of bimaxillary surgery.

Furthermore, the surgery is carried out through small approaches inside the mouth, thus avoiding visible scars on the face.
